Brief Note of Department

The Department came into existence in 1947 as the Department of Hygiene and Public Health. Dr. Hem Chandra Baruah was the first teacher in charge of the Department.

The growth of the Department in all dimensions viz. teaching, research, services and the culture of functioning with excellence was laid down by the WHO visiting Professor Dr Alex J Hogjer. Professor Dr. D N Phukan later became the Head of the Department. The Rural Health Training centre at Chabua situated at a distance 30 Kms from Dibrugarh came into existence during his tenure. Professor Phukan was subsequently succeeded by Prof. N M I Rahman and Prof. F U Ahmed. At present Prof. Alak Barua is the Head of the Department. The Department has shifted to it's present building in the year 2003. The MD course was started in September 1994 with the sanctioning of two numbers of seats for the course, subsequently the Post Graduate seat strength was increased to four in numbers from 2010. Till date twenty nine numbers of students completed Post Graduation from the Department. The MD course is recognized by the MCI.

The Department is also a study centre for PG Diploma in Maternity and Child Health and PG Diploma in District Health Management Course under the IGNOU. The examination for PG Diploma in Maternity and Child Health is also conducted in the Department itself.

The Department is also actively involved in conducting training programmes under IMNCI and NRHM for the doctors of the state health services and the para medical staff.

The Department is also actively involved in providing health care services to the community through the Rural Health Training Centre at Chabua, ROME complex Khowang, Tengakhat PHC and in the urban areas of Dibrugarh through the Urban Health Centre, and via satellite clinics situated at Boga Baba Mazhar, Desari club, Subhaspoli, and Youngster club. The staff of the Department also attend to the public health emergencies and render help to the district health authorities from time to time.

Special Service: The department is involved in providing health services to the masses through the Health Centre (Rural and Urban). In urban area these are Urban Health centre, Boga Baba Mazar, Desari Club, Subhash Poli and Youngster club.

In Rural area - Rural Health and Training Centre, Chabua, Tengakhat PHC and Khowang PHC.

  • Working as resource person for capacity building of District level MOs, Health and nutrition workers, frontline workers of tea estate and Community workers and Doctors working in riverine areain different programs like IMNCI, IUCD, SBA-NRT, FIMNCI, QA, Waste management, RI, Zn -ORS etc. by all faculty.
  • Field level monitoring and evaluation of different health and nutrition program in different district of Assam by all faculties as when required.
  • Public Health Emergency management by investigating any outbreak, giving recommendation and preparing protocol for managing any outbreak as and when required by faclties and interns.
  • Dr. Tulka goswami Mahanta working as a Nodal Officer for MCH Cell and IDSP unit of AMCH and Region Coordinator for PGDDHM Course under IGNOU.

OPD Services:

OPD are conducted at RHTC, Chabua, Urban Health Centre, PHC Khowang, Tengakhat under the guidance of SPM department.
